Girls in Research, Invention, Technology, and Science GRITS is an academic enrichment designed to create a scientific learning community for middle school girls. This community will develop a strong foundation for future science and technology pursuits among middle school girls who have shown an aptitude and interest in science. GRITS girls will learn through hands-on, minds-on experience, exposure to local scientists, and projects that serve the local community.
GRITS girls meet weekly to explore, invent and participate in hands-on projects involving solar energy, climate, air and water quality, fiber optics, fuel cells, Stirling engines, three-dimension rapid prototyping, biotechnology as well as have fun and bond with friends. In early October, GRITS takes a weekend trip to immerse ourselves in the outdoors and get to know each other better. Our "Women in Science" fair is in December, which is a chance for girls to interact with local scientists. Weekly meetings continue through May, when we have the GRITS Expo, which is an opportunity for GRITS girls to showcase their learning and share with the community.
Thank you to Burroughs Wellcome Fund for sponsoring the GRITS program from 2005 – 2009! We are currently looking for corporate underwriters to sponsor a GRITS girl. For a sponsorship of $300 (there are 16 girls from each school in GRITS)this program can continue. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
