Enrichments are required in all grade levels. Students in the elementary grades have enrichment classes at least once a week for the duration of the school year. Middle school students attend enrichment classes Monday - Thursday. With responsibility comes priviledge and middle schoolers are the leaders and role models in our school. Their work and behavior serve as expemplars for the younger students and their maturity entitles them to choice electives on Fridays (see Middle School Electives) and to joining one of two Marimba Bands that meet twice weekly after school (the EMBE Marimba Band requires auditions). All students have additional opportunities to sign up for Evergreen's EverAfter, an after-school program, with options such as sports, art class, crafts, dance and cooking (some are fee-based and some are free). Checkout the EverAfter Program page for more details and a complete list of activities. Adventure/PE: Adventure physical education offers athletics in the traditional and non-traditional settings. This enrichment is required for grades K - 8th. Here at the Evergreen campus students learn and practice sports, fitness routines, group games, initiatives, individual record setting, and how exercise relates to overall health. In addition, students travel off campus to participate in alternative sports such as skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, wall climbing, rock climbing, white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking and hiking. Each grade participates in an overnight adventure ranging from Kindergarten students sleeping in the school classroom to 8th graders embarking on a four day Outward Bound course. Middle school adventures are lined up in a progression in which students attend a beginning and end of year trip usually lasting two days. These adventures are integral to the curriculum and character education that Evergreen teaches. Led by Jo Smith, the teachers and students embark on journeys that challenge their “comfort zones." Art: The Art enrichment is required for K - 5th grades, and in 6th - 8th grades it is an elective. "I teach art by integrating art projects with learning expeditions." Lee Speed, is Evergreen's Art Teacher. Technology: The technology enrichment program, required for 2nd - 8th grade at Evergreen, is taught by Kevin Smith. The curriculum for these grades requires students to apply skills in the MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Explorer) and use varied resources to explore their expeditions in depth and create products for Exhibitions. Music: The music enrichment is required for K - 5th grades and then it is an elective for 6th - 8th grades. Experiencing music first hand is the main emphasis of music teacher Sue Ford. "We explore music from many different cultures and from our own rich American tradition. Every class involves singing, listening, moving and playing instruments. In a non-competitive, inclusive atmosphere, K-2 classes focus on small percussion and xylophones, 3-4 calsses focus on hand and stick drums and 5th grade classes focus on marimba." Students in Kindergarten go to music class twice a week and students in 1st through 5th grade go to music class once a week. For more information, contact Evergreen's Sue Ford. Spanish: The spanish enrichment program at Evergreen is taught by Barbara Allen. Health: The health enrichment program at Evergreen is taught by Barbara Allen. |
